St. Raymond’s Cemetery has been an integral part of St. Raymond Parish since its founding in 1842. The original cemetery was located in front of the church, where St. Raymond Elementary School is now. Known as the Old Cemetery, it was expanded to Tremont Avenue until it was full. Additional land was purchased, which became known as the New Cemetery, on Lafayette Avenue. Today, the entire St. Raymond’s Cemetery complex is 180 acres. When filled, it will be a holy and prayerful burial site for more than half a million people.
Buried in our cemetery is a brother of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton; Dr. L. Sullivan Ives, founder of The Catholic Protectory, originally an orphanage where Parkchester is now; Bishop Joseph Maria Pernicone, the first Italian-American Bishop of New York; Jazz singer Billie Holiday and Father Frank Duffy of the Fighting 69th regiment. In 1964, a portion of the St. Peter’s Section was set aside for the burial of clergy of the Archdiocese of New York. There is also section for the Sisters of Charity, who continue to serve the parish and a section for the Sisters of St. Ursula.
The Cemetery provides in-ground burials, in-ground crypt burials, mausoleum burials and niches for cremains in various sections of the cemetery. There is also a special Garden of Innocents where stillborn babies and young babies are buried with dignity and solemnity.
The only Catholic cemetery in the Bronx, today St. Raymond’s is one of the busiest cemeteries in the United States with nearly 2,500 burials each year.
